I love my family...

Dear HCC Family,

Wow, what good stuff last Sunday at our annual Family Service.  I thought the children did great, with a little help from their parents and grandparents.  Several couples and families sent me notes and mentioned in the hallway that the service came at just the right time for them.  Some said they were desperate for a break-through in their marriage; and that is exactly what happened.

For you men that are interested in a more in-depth understanding of Biblical Headship; I will be teaching on this subject at this Saturday’s Men’s Ministry breakfast.

Related to Biblical Headship is the topic of marriage.  If you’re looking to invest in your marriage, consider attending the Fall Marriage Retreat.  The HCC group of couples will be attending the annual Sandy Cove marriage weekend.  Check out the link here http://www.sandycove.org/docs/couples-weekend.php

The HCC Children’s Ministry lobby is getting a makeover this week.  Stop by and check out the new logo and lobby.  If you’re looking for a place to serve, CM is a very rewarding ministry.

Crying over melted ice...

Dear HCC Family,

La Don saved up her money and bought a refrigerator about five months ago, but I had one stipulation; no ice maker. I don’t like the way ice from a refrigerator ice maker tastes and I don’t like the shape of the cubes. Remember the Lord is monitoring what your thinking about me right now; be nice.

Because of this personal preference I generally get the ice from the grocery store and keep the pantry freezer stocked. Last Sunday after dropping off the kids to the Verb service I went for ice. The next morning La Don asked me to fill up the ice bin. However, upon visiting the freezer in the garage to get a bag; no ice. The ice was in the trunk of La Don’s car.

Reviewing how I could have done such a dumb thing, I could only imagine that I got distracted. Which is exactly why we make so many mistakes; we get distracted. Did I mention I also left two half gallons of ice cream too?

What are you being distracted from right now? Is it possible that you could lose what you’re being distracted from? Could it be your marriage or family?

Christian growth and crown molding...

Dear HCC Family,

A highly effective habit of any quality teacher is the ability to employ intentional redundancy.

I have installed crown molding three different times in my life. Each time about seven years had passed between jobs. Consequently each installation was just as bad as the previous one. Since that third time I have had crown molding installed twice; it was perfect. I’m sure you can guess the difference between the first three times and the last couple times; a professional installer was hired.

As I queried the pro carpenters, each one told me that they originally had a mentor that taught them the craft. Then they put those skills to use over and over again in different conditions until they became expert crown molding installers.

The same is true for anything. Learning something the right way, and then practicing it intentionally over and over again is the only way we can become proficient at anything. This applies to our spiritual growth as well.

Don’t forget to pack for our trip to Galatia this Sunday...

Dear HCC Family,

The letters in the New Testament were sent to local churches throughout the Middle East.  Under the influence of divine inspiration, God wrote to these local churches through his apostles.  The content of these letters contain teaching and principles that transcend culture and time.  Consequently these letters might as well been written to the church at Severn – called Heritage.

God wants to speak to you this week through the book of Galatians.  I will introduce the book this week and we will begin to extract it’s principles over the next few weeks.  Please read Galatians chapter 1 for this Sunday.  If you have a study Bible, like the one we have at the Resource Center, read the introductory comments to the book.

God’s Greatest Hits...

Dear HCC Family,

The Bible teaches us that music is an essential aspect of our connection to God. In a positive manner music is referenced hundreds of times in the Old and New Testament. From the earliest Bible books music is recognized as a natural human response to experiences with God and each other (Genesis 31 & Judges 5). Listen to this verse from Psalms 57 where the writer naturally responds to God through music; “My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and make music”.

Furthermore, the people of Jehovah God have always used music to communicate, teach, worship, and pass down the things of God to future generations. Therefore, since music is one of the most intimate and robust elements for relating to God, it is also one of the most powerful tools of the devil.

This Sunday I will discuss the essential role of music in the life of a Christian. In preparation for the sermon read Psalm 40.

Yes, Christians can get to the end of their ropes...

Dear HCC Family,
Yes, Christians can get to the end of their ropes, but they can never get to the end of their hope!

Hebrews 10:23 is our annual memory verse.  Please memorize it and cultivate the habit of quoting it several times a day, for the sake of spiritual nourishment.  The verse declares “Without wavering, let us hold tightly to the hope we say we have; for God can be trusted to keep his promise”.  The promise referenced is that the good work of redemption that he began in you, count on it, he will be faithful to complete it (Phil. 1:6).  It’s not about here; yet while here living a life of love and service for Christ is the only way to peace that transcends the trouble of this world.
This Sunday, you can plan on being encouraged by stories of hope from the Scriptures.  If you know of someone who could use some encouragement, take the risk and invite them to church, and then watch God do His work.

God speaks clearly...

Dear HCC Family,

On several occasions, those hearing Jesus speak asked him to interpret the meaning of the parable or the lesson he was sharing.  On a couple occasions he proceeded to interpret his metaphors before he was asked to.  Sometimes the Bible is crystal clear, and sometimes it’s not.

In chapter 8 & 9 of 2nd Corinthians the Bible is very clear.  I love it when passages need no interpretation; it makes for easy reading and preaching.

To be prepared for the sermon on Sunday please read 2nd Corinthians 8 & 9.

Don’t forget the Summer Bond BBQ finale Friday night starting at 6pm.  In order to eat you would have needed to register so that our BBQ Chef is prepared and also bring your tickets.  Dinner is being served between 6pm and 7pm.  Inflatable games will be available outside for the children.  Kids need to wear socks to jump.  Please have them wear socks or bring a pair for them tonight.

Been attending for a little while now and may be curious about membership?  Attend the Guest Connection Point this Sunday with Pastor Ed after the 9 & 11am services.
